The Avatar is an alien enemy encountered in XCOM 2.They are the ultimate goal of the Avatar Project, led by the ADVENT occupation on Earth: a new series of bodies for the Elders that are far more healthy than their decaying Ethereal ones, but still exponentially more powerful psionically. The Avatar Project is the main mission of ADVENT and The Elders during their presence on Earth. In the story of XCOM 2, it is one of the player's primary objectives to discover what the project entails and prevent its completion. Should the player fail in this task, they will lose the game. But could ignore them on a level. But as soon I saw that even the campaign itself has to be rushed because of this avatar thing, I stopped playing.

Other modders have taken different approaches to slowing down the project; there's no doubt in my mind that attempting to overlap them will result in some wonky results. On anything but legend the avatar timer is a joke. you'll be able to stretch the game out 2 years. On Legend it might actually end the game.
